He was disappointing in the Test series against Australia scoring only 74 runs in five innings at an average of 18.50, but he did make a useful contribution at Old Trafford when England were is some danger of following on at 149-6 before Simpson and Bailey saw them to safety. However, in the Championship for Nottinghamshire, he played outstandingly well hitting five hundreds, all at Trent Bridge, and scoring 1815 runs at an average of 56.71. The next highest Nottinghamshire average was 29.18. He made a century for the Gentlemen against the Players at Lord’s and another for MCC against Yorkshire at Scarborough where he also hit his highest innings against the Australians, 86 for T.N.Pearce’s XI. Nottinghamshire won nine Championship matches this season and worked their way up to ninth place in the table. Their revival was due to Simpson’s batting and to the bowling of the Australian, Bruce Dooland, who took 152 wickets in the Championship at 16.06. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 221.
