He was fourteenth in the national averages. He played in the first two Test matches against India, at Headingley and Lord’s but lost his opener’s spot to David Sheppard at Old Trafford and Kennington Oval. In the Championship he hit 1674 runs at 47.82 to head the Nottinghamshire averages once again. The Trent Bridge pitches still proved a nightmare for bowlers with only five definite results as against ten draws at the ground this season. Nottinghamshire improved only one place to last but one in the Championship table. Simpson hit two double centuries at Trent Bridge, against Sussex and Warwickshire and he made a single century there against Somerset. To prove he could make runs on other grounds he hit 163 at Hinckley against Leicestershire. He scored 101 against the Indians at Lord’s for MCC giving what Wisden describes as “a magnificent exhibition of free stroke play”. In the Tests he hit two fifties against a touring side who were generally outclassed. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 190.
