Championship, Simpson scored 1382 runs at an average of 47.65. He played in three of the season’s Test matches against South Africa scoring 137 in his first innings of the series at Trent Bridge and playing at Lord’s and Old Trafford before being left out of the last two games. He hit double centuries against Essex at Clacton-on-Sea and against Oxford University at The Parks and he also made hundreds against Kent and Warwickshire at Trent Bridge.
