It was not a successful season for the County who finished bottom in the Championship gaining only 40 points from their twenty-eight games with only one victory. Some of the problem was caused by the Tent Bridge pitches which were so lifeless that many matches resulted only in a battle for first innings points. At the end of the season the County Club appointed a special committee to investigate the problem. Matters reached a head when Glamorgan came to Trent Bridge at the end of June and, on a fine afternoon, added no more than 12 runs in fifteen overs. Simpson was so incensed by their tactics that he bowled an over of lobs. In the 18
