He regained his Test place and, at Old Trafford on his debut in a Test match in England he hit a sparkling 103 scoring his last 53 runs in just twenty seven minutes. At Kennington Oval in the Fourth Test he scored 68 helping Hutton to add 147 for the first wicket in England’s innings. In the Championship he hit 1906 runs at an average of 68.07 revelling in his new responsibilities as Walter Keeton’s opening partner in the Notts side. The pair put on more than a hundred for the first wicket in four consecutive matches in June - 174 against Yorkshire at Bramall Lane, 116 against Hampshire and 128 against Glamorgan both at Trent Bridge, and, finally, a massive 318 against Lancashire at Old Trafford.
