There was glory, though, in victory over the Australians at Swansea in August – a victory set up by the bowling of Shepherd – 9-73 in the match – and Pressdee, with 10-123. Wilfred Wooller described it as ‘the greatest single victory in the history of the club.’ Glamorgan batted first and had crumbled to 156 for eight when Shepherd came in and made 24 in nine hits. Just under two hours’ play was left when the visitors went in to bat. They came back at 39 for six. The pitch had been freshened by an afternoon shower. On Bank Holiday Monday, Veivers hit the Australians to just past the hundred, giving Glamorgan a lead of 96. By 5pm they were all out for 172, a lead of 268. Simpson and Lawry added 50 in 40 minutes before the Australian captain pushed Shepherd into the hands of Peter Walker at silly mid off. That was the only Australian second innings wicket to go down on the second day, on which they finished at 75 for one. Three wickets fell quickly on the last day, but Lawry and Veivers took the score to 169 before Pressdee bowled Veivers. Barry Jarman batted aggressively and the score moved on to 207 before Lawry was caught on the boundary. At 217 Shepherd had Martin caught by his spinning partner. Then Billy Slade caught Sellers, and Pressdee got rid of the last man. Shepherd had a £15 award from the Milk Marketing Board for the best match achievement. Throughout the season Shepherd bowled the most overs and finished second in the Glamorgan averages. Pressdee (97) and Wheatley (88) topped his 87 wickets. 45
