Famous Cricketers No 49 - Don Shepherd

1957 In 1957 Glamorgan crept up from 13th to 9th place in the Championship. The county chairman, Col. Bevan, described McConnon and Shepherd as ‘a varied and dangerous spin attack’. Shepherd topped the averages with 117 wickets at 16.81 and hit 13 sixes. McConnon’s return to the staff was a successful one. Early in the season skipper Wooller would throw the ball to him first, but later he began to put his initial trust in Shepherd. His success seems to have interested the England selectors, who picked him for the M.C.C. team which played the West Indians at Lord’s. It was a rain affected match and neither Shepherd nor the other trialist, left-arm spinner Hilton, impressed, with both Clyde Walcott and Gary Sobers scoring hundreds.
