Shepherd was way down the county averages - eighth, with 59 wickets at 30.57. He was switching between seam bowling and his still experimental off-spin and secured his first major success in that style with 12 wickets against Somerset at Weston-super-Mare at the end of what had otherwise been a poor season. The Glamorgan committee report recorded that he ‘had little success as a seam bowler, but continued to develop the fast cutter, on Appleyard lines.’ He had more chances to bowl it, with McConnon breaking a bone in his hand and missing half the season, and the reserve off-spinner, Ward, proving inaccurate. The experiment began when wicket-keeper Haydn Davies opined that Shepherd was not hitting the seam consistently because of a ‘floppy wrist’. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 141.
