Famous Cricketers No 47 - John Wisden

1850 This was the year in which Wisden performed his best remembered feat of clean bowling all ten batsmen of the South at Lord’s on July 15th in a match won by the North in one day. It is a great pity that his full analysis was unrecorded as it has remained as one of the truly great performances of all time. It is curious that he was playing against the South of England for which team he was more obviously qualified. Other good bowling results included nine wickets in an innings (fourteen in the match) for Young (Under 36) against Old (Over 36) at Lord’s and thirteen wickets for Sussex v M.C.C., also at Lord’s which proved a happy hunting ground. Altogether he took fifty-six wickets in four matches at Headquarters this season. He scored his maiden first-class century, for Sussex in the match against Kent at Tunbridge Wells.
