In the provincial games the batting was aggressive, but in the Tests safety-first was too often the order of the day on wickets which greatly favoured batsmen. The final Test at Druban was the notorious ten-day Test planned to be played to a finish as England led only by 1-0. However, after a record 1981 runs had been scored the game was abandoned to allow England to travel to Cape Town and catch the boat home. Admidst all the high scoring Verity’s bowling again stood out. In the Tests he took most wickets for England, was top of the bowling averages and bowled 775 balls more than any other bowler. Included in this total were a record 766 balls (since beaten by Sonny Ramadhin) in the Durban Test. On the tour as a whole he finished second in the averages to Len Wilkinson, bowling 345 balls more than his nearest rival. His value as the cornerstone of the attack was as great as ever with his tireless accuracy never more in evidence. He did, however, receive one minor setback in the game with Orange Free State when the last man, aptly named Sparks, hit him 51
