Verity was again called upon to keep one end closed and this he did admirably. Of his bowling in the First Test, at Brisbane, when Allen and Voce took 18 wickets between them in England’s 322 run victory Wisden notes that his first innings contribution of 1-52 in 28 eight-ball overs should not be overlooked, as his nagging length, recalling J.C.White’s bowling in 1928-29, contributed to many of Voce’s wickets. In Australia’s first innings in the Second Test at Sydney he reached the landmark of 100 wickets in Test cricket. In the Tests he bowled the most overs at a cost of 2.32 per eight-ball over (1.7 in 6-ball over terms) which was particularly appreciated during Bradman’s innings of 270, 212 and 169. In the New Year Melbourne Test he dismissed Bradman in each innings, thus becoming the first bowler to take his wicket twice in two Tests (later to be joined in 1948 by Alec Bedser). Although his form with the bat did not match that of the 1936 season in England, he did have one triumph when, emulating Wilfred Rhodes, he opened England’s innings, in the Adelaide Test. He and Charlie Barnett made England’s best opening stands of the series with 53 and 45, not exactly Hobbs and Sutcliffe perhaps, but far better than the other starts England were given. On the tour as a whole he bowled over 700 more balls than any of the other bowlers and was an invaluable member of the party on and off the field. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 256.
