He scored his best ever Championship score of 89, at Bath, as well as 96* for Yorkshire against the Indians. He started the season in irresistible form with the ball as in the first six matches he took 65 wickets at 8.18, including 15 wickets against Kent and Oxford University, 13 against Worcestershire and 11 against Glamorgan. In the Kent game he took 6-26 and 9-12 in 6.3 overs and also caught the 10th man. Against Nottinghamshire at Bradford he took 8 wickets in 9 overs for 42 runs which suggests that this was an all-action innings! During the season he took 9 wickets in an innings twice and 8 wickets three times. He headed the Test bowling averages in the three matches against India with 15 wickets at 15.2 conceding only 2 runs per over, and also achieved what was to be his highest Test score of 66*, at Old Trafford. No doubt he took great satisfaction when, playing for the M.C.C. Australian XI against H.D.G.Leveson-Gower’s XI at Scarborough, he took the wickets of fellow Yorkshiremen Sutcliffe, Mitchell, Smailes and Sellers. One ferocious assault was suffered, at Bath, when his batting triumph was slightly spoiled by figures of 9-0-89-2 which included 28 in an over by Hazell - 4 sixes - and 20 in four balls by Hunt. Wisden summed up his season as follows: “When the turf was false, his wonderful command of length, spin and flight enabled him to create havoc amongst batsmen… he remained without an equal in this country as a slow left-arm bowler.” He was obviously an automatic choice for G.O.B.Allen’s side to tour Australia and New Zealand in the winter of 1936-37.
