He bowled over 100 overs more than any of his colleagues, showing remarkable stamina on a tour which lasted just under five months and involved excessive travelling and extreme heat. His immaculate length and uncanny accuracy were threatened only once, when Lala Amarnath scored an exciting 118 on his Test debut at Bombay and even the great Verity was “treated with scant respect” according to an Indian writer. Verity’s batting also proved very useful on several occasions and he scored his first Test fifty in the match at Calcutta. A feature of the tour was the enormous interest shown by the Indian crowds, particularly in the First Test at Bombay when an estimated 250,000 saw the four days of play. Once again Douglas Jardine was his touring captain, much to Hedley’s pleasure as he had enormous respect for him as a player and a man, feelings reciprocated in full by his leader. This was to be Jardine’s final series as a Test cricketer as the Australians were due in England the following season and memories of the previous winter in Australia were still too bitter. He finished in style with innings of 60, 21, 65 and 35* and with an overall Test average of 48.00. Jardine has gone down in folklore mainly as the Bodyline captain, but it should be remembered that he was a very fine batsman in his own right with a career average of 46.83.
