Wisden , which had always had certain reservatons about his powers of flight compared with those of spin and accuracy, noted that “he was able to flight it [the ball] to better purpose than formerly” and his bowling was a key factor in Yorkshire’s third Championship in a row. Starting the season with 12 wickets against Derbyshire and 11 against Essex at a combined total of 127 runs he rarely had a poor day. Against Essex at Leyton, the year after Sutcliffe and Holmes had made their record stand of 555 there, he equalled Colin Blythe’s 1907 record of taking 17 wickets in a day which came in the middle of a four-match county spell of 50 wickets for 438 runs (ave 8.76). His 17th wicket at Leyton was his 50th against Essex in three seasons. Other performances of note were his 9-59 at Dover against Kent, 7 wickets in each innings for Yorkshire against the touring West Indians at Harrogate and 5 wickets in each innings against them for H.D.G.Leveson-Gower’s XI at Scarborough.
