Famous Cricketers No 45 - Hedley Verity
between Verity and Bradman. It has been said that on a good pitch he was the only English bowler who consistently achieved anything like parity with the ‘Don’ and on their first encounter, at Perth, in the second match of the tour he dismissed him for 3 whilst claiming 7-37, his best ever figures in Australia. His first Australian Test wicket was also that of Bradman when he caught and bowled him at Adelaide. Altogether he took Bradman’s wicket on ten occasions, sharing this particular record with the great Australian leg-spinner Clarrie Grimmett. With the bat he scored his 1,000th run in first-class cricket with the last run of his 54* at Hobart (his first half-century in first-class cricket), and his 45 and 40 at Adelaide helped in two significant partnerships of 96 with Paynter and 98 with Ames.
