In the First Test, Australia slumped from 244/4 to 249 all out, an outstanding catch by Evans to dismiss Benaud starting the collapse. Rain prevented England forcing a victory. In the Second Test a long defiant stand by Bailey and Watson forced a draw, but Evans contributed by playing out time after their dismissals. The Third and Fourth Tests were drawn and England won the Fifth Test at the Oval to regain the Ashes. This was the Benefit Year for Evans and the sum raised was £5,259 - a Kent record at the time.
