For Kent he scored 691 runs and had 60 dismissals, 34 of which were with D.V.P.Wright. Kent finished fourth in the Championship. In the First Test against South Africa, Evans scored 74 in the second innings to contribute to a drawn match. By now, he had made the wicket-keeping job for England his own. At the Scarborough Festival playing for the South against the North, after Len Hutton mishooked a ball from Alec Bedser, Evans ran over 40 yards to take the catch - the comments by Len Hutton were apparently unprintable.
