He started the season well with a century and four fifties in his first eight innings. His hundred was scored against Western Australia at Sydney when he and R.B.Simpson (122) added 185 in 127 minutes for the third wicket; Harvey made his 128* in 165 minutes with nineteen fours and made 104 of them between the lunch and tea intervals. He scored a brisk half century in the first Test and in the Third Test he and R.B.Simpson (91) added 160 for the second wicket although Harvey was far from comfortable and was dropped at 2 and 32. At Sydney against South Australia he made a masterly 231* in 287 minutes with twenty-two fours. With G.Thomas (72) he added 149 and in the last forty-eight minutes of the innings he added 100 in an unbroken stand with J.W.Martin (28*); 120 of the runs were scored between the lunch and tea intervals on the second day. During the match he announced that he would be retiring from all cricket at the end of the Fifth Test match to concentrate on business; R.Benaud had also signified that he would not be touring again and A.K.Davidson had announced he would retire at the end of the series. Benaud won the toss in the Adelaide Test and Australia lost R.B.Simpson and W.M.Lawry for sixteen. With the score at 21 Harvey was dropped off consecutive balls from Illingworth, at slip and backward short-leg, and when he reached 26 he was dropped again at slip off Dexter. After these let-offs he made an excellent 154 in 326 minutes with a five and eighteen fours 40
