In the course of this innings he passed C.Hill’s total of 17,216 to become, after D.G.Bradman, the second highest scorer in Australian cricket. At Lahore in the second Test Australia were left 122 to win in under two hours and Harvey (37), N.C.O’Neill (43*) and R.Benaud (21*) all batted confidently to gain the victory. The Third Test was a drab affair notable only for the fact that Dwight D. Eisenhower became the first President of the United States to watch Test cricket when he attended the fourth day’s play. Moving on to India Harvey made his eighteenth Test century with 114 at Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi adding 132 in ninety-seven minutes with K.D.Mackay (78). At the end of the game which Australia won by an innings and 127 runs the spectators showed their displeasure by jostling the umpires and throwing bottles on to the field. India gained their first victory over Australia at Kanpur when J.M.Patel (14-142) exploited the newly laid turf with his off-spin. Another Test hundred followed at Bombay as Harvey and N.C.O’Neill (163) added 207 for the third wicket which remained a record for either side in the series until it was beaten by A.R.Border (162) and K.J.Hughes (100) with 222 at Madras in 1979/80.
