Scoring 383 in his first three matches Harvey then fell away but headed the aggregates with 448. In the first match at Christchurch the Australians were set 222 to win in 160 minutes; Harvey was dropped at three and again at four but in seventy-five minutes he and L.E.Favell (47) added 82 and with R.Benaud (75*) 62 were added in only thirty-one minutes. Harvey’s share in these stands was 68 in 108 minutes with seven fours and the Australians got home with ten minutes to spare. Against Otago he hit a six and twenty-four fours in an innings of 161 in 181 minutes; he shared a stand of 204 with R.B.Simpson (75) that took 152 minutes, Harvey’s share being 141 and Simpson’s 58. During this innings he became the tenth Australian to pass 15,000 first-class runs. The first representative game against New Zealand was played at Christchurch and in the second innings he batted for 149 minutes to score 84 with thirteen fours; with I.D.Craig (123*) he added 105 in 116 minutes, Harvey’s share being 70. At one point Harvey dominated the play by scoring 51 while Craig added two singles. In the last representative match the new star, nineteen-year-old N.C.O’Neill, scored 102 in 165 minutes with thirteen fours. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 205.
