Finally restored to health he exceeded his 1933 aggregate by over a thousand and in scoring ten Championship hundreds created a Kent record. Many of his displays were dazzling - his 100 in 63 minutes at Dover was the fastest hundred of the season and made him the first recipient of the Lawrence Trophy. Although playing second best, his 172 in Kent's record innings at Brentwood helped Bill Ashdown to add what was then the Kent record for any wicket of 352. His fine form saw him restored to the Test side at The Oval, but he had an unhappy time in what was his final Test, failing with the bat and finding himself struggling as the stand-in wicket-keeper with Ames incapacitated.
