He was particularly successful with the bat in Australia where he improved his remarkable record at Sydney with a double century scored with ease and power. He did not bat with conspicuous success in the New Zealand Tests, but the wickets suited his bowling and he recovered something of his old skill - his 7-76 at Wellington being his Test best.
