For Kent, his record was 900 runs and thirteen average points down, reflecting an indifferent start to the season with only three fifties before scoring his first century at the end of June. At which point he proceeded to score three more in a row. He also finished the season strongly. He was restored to the Test side and averaged 126. In fact in all matches against the South Africans he averaged 117. With fifty wickets he had a more profitable season than of late, and was well placed among the Kent bowlers supporting Freeman, be it at a distance. 72
