His average fell somewhat but a wet summer did not help. His 138 (17 4s) in 2½ hours against Yorkshire at Tonbridge was one of his finest innings, the remainder of the team scoring only 80 between them. His 270 (3 6s, 29 4s) during Canterbury Week was his highest score in England. Although he again completed the “double”, his bowling fell back. In a wet summer his return should have been better and he was clearly showing signs of overwork. 54
