In a much reduced season he still achieved the “double”. This was despite appearing in only 20 matches and playing far fewer than Rhodes and Douglas, the only other players to achieve this feat in 1919. With Blythe killed in action and Fielder retired, he was promoted to the additional role of front-line Kent bowler, and a season of good weather and hard wickets prompted Wisden to comment not for the first time, nor the last, that too much bowling was handicapping his batting. 36
