His 185 (one 6, 24 4s) in the remarkable 235 10th wicket partnership with Arthur Fielder against Worcestershire, then a world record, still the English record, was his individual best performance of the season. His good all-round form attracted the attention of the Test selectors and he made his debut in the final Test.
