This was a remarkable innings even by his standards. Although he gave a sharp chance when he had made 20 he did not let this disturb him. He put on 154 with T.W.Graveney for the third wicket and 192 with T.E.Bailey for the fifth wicket and altogether hit one six and thirty-three fours. It was the highest Test individual score made at the ground, a record that still stands today. He made 93 runs in the next game of the rubber at Old Trafford and 52 and 29 in the Fourth Test at Kennington Oval when England fielded an experimental side and were surprisingly beaten by 24 runs. In a very wet season Middlesex, despite winning their opening six Championship games, slumped to seventh place. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 403.
