Compton had an excellent start to the season and in hitting five hundreds in May failed by only 91 runs to score a thousand runs by the end of that month, the nearest he ever came to this still remarkable feat. His overall record was satisfactory enough. In the Test matches against his old rivals, the South Africans, he managed one century and two fifties in the four games that he played.
