A serious operation kept him out of the game for most of June and July. He finally returned to Test cricket in the Fourth and final Test against the West Indies at Kennington Oval where he scored 44 and 11 in a match in which England were overwhelmed by the visitors. The record of England this summer did not bode well for their forthcoming trip to Australasia. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 282.
