He started the tour in great form making four centuries in five consecutive innings including the extraordinary game at Benoni against North Eastern Transvaal. In a very one-sided game Compton hit his first hundred in sixty-six minutes, the second in seventy-eight, and the third in thirty-seven. His scoring strokes included five sixes and forty-two fours, a total of 198 from hits to the boundaries. He and R.T.Simpson added 399 for the third wicket.
