Famous Cricketers No 39 - D.C.S.Compton
had a good start to the tour and had hit four scores of over fifty in his eight first-class innings up to the First Test. His record in the first three Tests was disappointing; he made only one fifty in these six innings. After this however his record improved dramatically and he hit four centuries in succession in two games in Tasmania and then more importantly in the Fourth Test, at Adelaide, a match where the temperature reached 105 degrees Fahrenheit. In a superb innings lasting four and a quarter hours he hit fifteen fours and had valuable partnerships with J.Hardstaff, J.T.Ikin and N.W.D.Yardley. In their second innings England lost eight wickets for 255 runs but then T.G.Evans, in a remarkably restrained way, helped Compton to add 85 runs before W.R.Hammond declared. Evans was at the wicket for ninety-five minutes before scoring his first run. Denis made 103 not out in the second innings. Arthur Morris of Australia also made two hundreds in this match, the first time two players had accomplished the feat in the same Test match. Compton narrowly missed a fifth successive first-class hundred when he was dismissed for 93 in the return match with Victoria. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 154.
