This included three hundreds against Surrey, Gloucestershire and Lancashire, all at Lord’s. His place was assured for the First Test at Trent Bridge against the full might of Australia. Denis came in at the fall of the fourth wicket with the score at 281 and helped to add 206 with Eddie Paynter for the fifth wicket in 139 minutes. He became England’s youngest century maker and the third youngest ever Test centurion. In the remaining three Tests he scored 6 and 76 not out at Lord’s, 14 and 15 at Headingley and 1 at Kenington Oval in the match won by a record margin by England of an innings and 579 runs. He hit a splendid undefeated century of 180 against Essex, his then highest first-class score, in which he added 159 runs with W.F.F.Price for the seventh wicket.
