Despite this, Wright was well regarded as a captain but was handicapped by Test calls and injuries to key players. The captain was also dogged by a foot injury and missed several games in the early part of the summer and he broke down again at Hastings in July. When fit, however, he remained as effective as ever and figures of 8 for 30 in the first innings against Middlesex at Maidstone in July were instrumental in a rare Kent success. During the Canterbury Week fixture against Hampshire, Wright claimed his 2,000 th victim in first-class cricket. At the end of the season, Wright approached the Kent Committee and asked not to be considered for the captaincy for 1957 in order to concentrate his efforts into his bowling and to a deserved second benefit year.
