Regular bouts of fibrositis generally hindered his play and a thigh strain incurred during the Third Test at Sydney proved a further setback. The tour had started promisingly with excellent figures at Perth against Western Australia but his performances in the Test Matches in Australia were slightly disappointing as he found it difficult to pitch his googly on a good enough length for it to be troublesome. The second leg of the Tour, in New Zealand, saw Wright at the top of his game. At Christchurch he achieved the highest score of his Test Match career, a performance which was followed by first innings figures of 5 for 48 at Wellington (his final appearance in Test cricket) which were instrumental in England’s victory.
