He was frequently asked to bowl long spells in temperatures that were in excess of 100 degrees when shorter spells would have almost certainly improved his effectiveness. As it was, though England were outplayed by the Australians in the Test matches, Wright ended the series with a reputation enhanced as he took more wickets than any bowler of either side. His figures of 7 for 105 in the Fifth Test at Sydney in February/March were a personal best in Test cricket and included a spell of 5 wickets in just eleven overs. Wright’s “reward” for his endeavours on a tour which commenced on August 31 st , 1946 and ended when the party arrived home in England on April 6 th , 1947 was £800. 28
