Wright did not enjoy the best of fortune in this match as several chances were spilled from his bowling. However, he sufficiently impressed the selectors and made his Test debut at Trent Bridge in June where he performed admirably despite the savagery of McCabe’s memorable hitting; and may well have helped England win the Headingley Test had he been brought into the attack a little earlier in the last innings. Unfortunately, a hand injury incurred at Oakham in mid-August cost Wright his place in the Test side but he had already done enough to ensure his inclusion amongst the party to tour South Africa during the winter. 16
