He soon showed he was up to the task and claimed over one hundred wickets in the season for the first time having bowled more than twice as many balls than in any previous summer. Highlights of his season were hat-tricks against Worcestershire at Worcester in July (in career-best figures of 7 for 27); and against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge later in the same month.
