From the outset he was in excellent form, commencing with his maiden five-wicket haul at Cardiff; whilst five of his first nine innings of the summer were half-centuries (four of which were unbeaten). With ‘Tich’ Freeman’s retirement imminent, Wright appeared more often in order to learn all he could from the little master. The lessons were well learnt and, following Wright’s first haul of ten wickets in a match at Trent Bridge, he deservedly received his County Cap during the Canterbury Week fixture with Hampshire.
