Famous Cricketers No 100 - Richie Benaud
Foreword by Arthur Morris, OBE Sometime ago, I was asked who was the better captain, Don Bradman or Richie Benaud. I went for cover by retreating behind this allegory and saying “Imagine if Don and Richie come to a river and decide to cross to the other side. Don would put his toe in the water and test it, and then swim across. Richie would walk across. However both would reach the other side at the same time.” There is no doubt that as a captain Richie possessed daring and flair. Right from the time, so many years ago, when Richie first played for NSW as a skilful spin bowler and punishing middle order batsman, I was impressed by his enthusiasm and determination. These characteristics and his deep love for the game never left him throughout his playing career and led him to becoming a great Australian cricketer and an outstanding captain. Since his playing days, Richie has become Mister Cricket. No-one has had more impact and influence on the state and future of the game. I can’t think of anyone who would be a better role model. It couldn’t happen to a nicer bloke. 3
