The Australians struggled mightily on the unfamiliar matting pitch, crawling to a total of 80 after almost a full day’s play. Benaud top-scored for Australia with a half century in the second innings, but ultimately the Australians had no answer to Fazal Mahmood. The fast medium bowler achieved prodigious movement throughout, routing the Australians with match figures of 13/114. Never the easiest of tours, this trip to Pakistan, the first undertaken by an Australian Test team, was particularly difficult. Benaud summed it up as “Ten days of illness, injury and a beating on the field”. Things went better in India, where Benaud exploited the spin-friendly conditions perfectly, finishing with 7/72 in the first innings, his best-ever figures at Test level. He backed this up with four wickets in the second innings, completing his only ten wicket match in Tests. Many of the Australians struggled with illness, including Benaud who contracted the dreaded and energy-sapping dengue fever. Remarkably, he didn’t miss a match and finished with 23 wickets for the series, which Australia won 2-0. He was named one of India’s five cricketers of the year for his efforts.
