Famous Cricketers No 100 - Richie Benaud
McDonald and Neil Harvey. One of the highlights of the season was a testimonial match for Arthur Mailey and Johnny Taylor at the SCG. These matches raised retirement funds for great players of the past and doubled as selection trials. Benaud underlined his claims for a place on the ship to England with five wickets and a century in the match. Benaud also led New South Wales for one match when Miller was injured. He had mixed success in his first game as leader, scoring 73 in the first innings but failing to take a wicket. The side was heading for a rare defeat when rain intervened. At grade level, he was again a prolific scorer, hitting 484 runs at 60.5, the best batting average in the competition. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 84.
