Hobbs had a poor season, by his own standards. His 116 at Bath was his hundredth century - he was the third man after Grace and Hayward to reach this landmark - and no doubt, even in 1923, there was a good deal of ballyhoo which may well have upset him. He appeared in one very remarkable match at Scarborough when a powerful scratch team were left to make only 28 to beat the West Indians. Hobbs, Stevens, Ernest Tyldesley, Rhodes, Chapman and Mann were all out before Douglas and Fender pulled Leveson-Gower’s team through, taking the score from 19 to 31.
