He had a much better record, statistically, in several post-war seasons, but it is generally acknowledged that he played more cautiously after the war. In 1914, he played the following spectacular innings:- 100 in 75 minutes and 74 in 75 minutes against Yorkshire. 183 in 170 minutes in the next match, against Warwickshire. 215 in 240 minutes against Essex, the next highest score being 27. 226 in 260 minutes against Nottinghamshire. Surrey’s last two matches were cancelled because of the war, and it is very probable that if these, and the usual Festival matches, had been played, Hobbs would have scored 3000 runs in the season (something he was not to achieve until 1925) and would have scored three more centuries, which would eventually have given him 200 in his career without any argument.
