Famous Cricketers No 1 - Jack Hobbs

1909/10 - MCC in South Africa Hobbs had a splendid tour of South Africa, taking the place as England’s leading batsman that he was to retain for almost 20 years. He hardly ever failed; he was unwell in the Third Test, suffering from heatstroke, and although he played brilliantly in the second innings to win the match for England, he may well have been suffering a reaction to this when he failed in the Fourth Test. In this series, Hobbs and Rhodes began their very successful opening partnership in Tests, with stands of 159, 94 and 221; they had opened in two games at Scarborough in the 1909 season. Hobbs scored 39 and 31 against The Reef at Vogelfontein in a match that was for many years reckoned as part of his first-class record, but the South African authorities have definitely ruled that it was not first-class.
