Wiltshire Cricketers 1858-2014

Early Championship matches were played against Berkshire, Dorset, Oxfordshire, Kent II, Somerset II and Surrey II. In 1907 the Championship was divided into Divisions and Wiltshire played in the Midlands Division, transferring in 1908 to the South Division and in 1910 to the South and West Division From 1912 there was only one table until 1983 when it was split into Eastern and Western Divisions, Wiltshire playing in the Western. Since 1983 opponents have been Berkshire, Buckinghamshire (initially, but in 1992 replaced by Herefordshire), Cheshire, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Oxfordshire, Somerset II (replaced by Wales in 1988) and Shropshire. I have been assisted in many ways in tracing match scores and players, and I would especially like to thank Brian White, the present Wiltshire Team Manager, Treasurer, and former Captain, who has provided a wealth of information and obtained details of players making their debuts over the past few years. I also wish to thank former players John Savin, David Gardner and John Hayes and members of the ACS, including Tony Webb, who again has provided a considerable amount of information on early matches and players, Peter Griffiths and Philip Bailey for producing the players’ career averages from the vast CricketArchive database, Michael Pearce, Roger Heavens (Haygarth manuscripts), Roy New, Cyril Waite and initially Nick Webb. The staff at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre and at the Local Studies and Maritime Library, Southampton have also been extremely helpful. The players’ biographies and averages include details from the following two-day friendly county matches played between 1858 and 1990 and Championship matches between 1895 and 2014. The odds matches, early matches against wandering clubs and some matches in which the county team is defined as “Club and Ground” are not included. The biographies section also lists separately players who have played only in List A matches, MCCA Knockout matches and two day inter county Club and Ground matches 1947-70 and these follow the main biographies. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to obtain full bowling analyses in some 19th century and Championship matches.
