Devon Cricketers 1859-2012

However, the County has been extremely successful in recent times and was champion county in 1978, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2004 (Joint), 2006, 2011. The County has also won the Knockout Cup four times in 1992, 1994, 1998, 2008. In other years the County were Championship runners-up in 1906, 1968, 1992, 2003, and runners-up in the Knockout in 1991, 2001, 2002. Matches in the Championship were initially played regularly against Berkshire, Cornwall, Dorset, Oxfordshire and occasionally Kent II, Monmouthshire, Somerset II, Surrey II and Wiltshire. When the Championship was split into two divisions in 1983, Devon was placed in the Western Division playing Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cheshire, Cornwall, Dorset, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, Somerset II and Wiltshire. Somerset II was replaced by Wales in 1988 and Buckinghamshire was replaced by Herefordshire in 1992. The County has played 33 matches in the Gillette Cup, Nat West Bank Trophy and C and G Trophy winning 7, the most memorable being the win over Leicestershire in 2004. Many people have assisted me with research for this book and I would like to specifically thank Conrad Sutcliffe, the West Country journalist for his major input, Jeff Stanyer (Exeter/Devon), Phil Barrow (Plymouth), Devon officials Roger Moylan-Jones, Geoff Evans, Neil Gamble and especially Harold Shaw, who has worked tirelessly to complete the County scores. A considerable number of former players have also readily responded to my requests for information for which I am grateful. Archivists from many schools and universities have also been most co-operative including Mike Sampson of Blundell’s School, Kevin White of Exeter School and Berwick Coates of West Buckland School. ACS Members have also provided information and I wish to acknowledge the help I have received from Tony Webb, Brian Carpenter, Keith Walmsley, Roger Heavens (Haygarth manuscripts) and Peter Wynne Thomas. I also wish to add my grateful thanks to Peter Griffiths and Philip Bailey of CricketArchive for providing averages as this has saved considerable time in putting the book together. The players biographies and averages include details from the following friendly matches played between 1859 and 1957 and Championship matches from 1901.The odds matches mentioned above, early matches against wandering clubs and by the Club and Ground against MCC are not included. The Championship finals, which were only scheduled as one-day matches, have been included in the Championship averages. The biographies also include sections on players who played only in List A matches and MCCA Knockout matches.
