Cambridgeshire Cricketers 1819-2006
matches against local teams and these were of one day duration and statistics for these matches are not included. Also, there were regular fixtures against the University Long Vacation Club and the Quidnuncs but these statistics have not been included. After 1891 matches were arranged with various Counties and a regular annual match against the MCC took place sometimes on a home and away basis until 1914. When the Championship was played on a revised formula which took effect from the 1983 season the County has played in the Eastern Division. Unfortunately, the Club has not met with much success, winning the Championship only once in 1963, but winning the KO Cup twice in 1995 and 2003. I have had to endeavour to trace many match scores from newspapers as Cambridgeshire did not include any scores in its handbook until 1984. Fortunately many match scorebooks were available from 1927 excluding the years 1936-1948 and 1963. The compiling of this book having taken four years would not have been possible without valuable contributions from many people. The initial list of twentieth century players had been drawn up some years ago by Stephen Harper-Scott and his list had been passed to the late Philip Thorn who was able to complete many missing details, and to them I owe my thanks. I am also extremely indebted to Tony Webb who has also been a vital source of information especially with tracing complete scores. The Cambridgeshire County Secretary Peter Gooden and the current Team Manager Keith Coburn have also helped in many respects for which I am grateful. Kevin Preston has kindly provided details of players in Minor Counties representative matches. Many school and college archivists and librarians at the Cambridgeshire Collection at Cambridge Public library have been very obliging when I have requested information. I would also like to thank Don Ambrose for allowing me full use of his library, and finally, I wish to thank the numerous ACS members and others who have provided information including Bob Simons, Roy New, Brian Hunt, Colin Munford, Dennis Lambert, Roger Heavens, Julian Lawton-Smith, Philip Bailey, Stephen Musk, Stephen Harper-Scott, Derek Wing and many former County players who also responded to my requests for information. Finally, I wish to thank Peter Griffiths and CricketArchive for providing the players averages for the earlier period. In addition to Important Matches the following additional county matches have been taken into consideration when calculating the averages: v Cambridge University 1855 - 24/25 May 1856 - 8/9 May 1857 - 7/8 May 1858 - 6/7 May 1859 - 12/13 May 1861 - 30/31 May 1862 - 26/27 May v Essex 1858 - 19/20 August 1861 - 18/19 July 1861 - 22/23 August v Norfolk 1862 - 17/18 July 1862 - 14/15 August 1867 - 29/30 May 1867 - 20/21 June 1868 - 4/5 June Tony Percival March 2007 4
