A ll Ceylon ; but the leading European players, who had only just returned from their trip to Calcutta, were unable to play, and so a rubber game with a Ceylonese eleven was substituted. Believing th at the wicket would play queerly, Amath, the home side’s captain, sent the tourists in to b a t ; but it would not appear th at his action was justified— in any event it did not help his side to victory. Minnett, missed at 5, hit well for 47, and he and Wybergh Docker added 72 for the sixth wicket after 5 had fallen for 80. In the second innings Waddy and Ebsworth put on 54 for the second wicket. Pollocks batted nearly two hours for his 35 in the second innings of the Ceylonese ; but he had every justification for his defensive game. The tourists won b y 85 runs. T he R e v . E. F. D IM BULA AND D IK O Y A . A t Radella, January 15 and 16. Dimbula and Dikoya combined meant the pick of the planters, nearly all old public school cricketers of ability, with a county man in A. L. Gibson as captain. But they did not show up well. Ebsworth hit up 46 in 30 minutes, two 6's and five 4’s included ; Minnett made 31 (of his 43) in 15 minutes after lunch ; and C. T. Docker scored even faster than either, making his 68 (four 6’s, five 4’s) in just half-an-hour. The planters’ first innings was a poverty- stricken affair ; but they did better work in the follow-on. H azlitt was always difficult to play, and only 46 runs were scored in the match off 170 balls sent down by him. The N .S.W . team won by an innings and 51 runs. T he R e v . E. F.
