62 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. M a r c h , 1914. 12 fours, and only missed for want of a another boundary stroke in his first innings the distinction of getting two centuries in the match. His second innings was not chanceless by any means, but it was a rare good one for all that. There was no hope of a finish ; but after 3 wickets had fallen for 80, Smith and Gooden added 81 unparted by some excellent batting. N e w Z e a l a n d . First Innings. N e w Z e a l a n d . After a night in the train, the New Zealanders could scarcely have been in the pink of condition. The club side included Ironmonger, the Queensland left-hander, who has already taken up his duties at Melbourne, Frank Laver, Colin McKenzie, and one or two other men who have played for the state, but was not specially strong. Reese bowled very effectively. At the end of the first day New Zealand had lost 7 wickets for 84 ; but Tattersall and Sandman played up so well, adding 87 for the ninth wicket, that the total topped 200. The club side put up 130 in 110 minutes, McKenzie scoring 68* in capital style, and then declared. Three N.Z. wickets fell for 32 ; but Hemus and Hickmott then collared the bowling, and added 120 unparted, the Auckland skipper, who hit 9 fours, showing splendidly free form. 18 18 H. J. T r o u g h t o n , the newly-elected Kent captain, was entertained at a dinner given by the Gravesend C.C. on Feb ruary 12. Pressure of Parliamentary duties prevented Lord Harris and Lord Darnley from being present. Mr. A. Walker made a capital speech in proposing Mr. Troughton's health. “ The spirit of the game as played by Kent would be upheld under his leadership,” he said. Of that all may feel confident, we are sure. THE AMERICAN CRICKETER. Founded 1877. Published by the Associated Cricket Clubs 0 ! Philadelphia.
