SEVENTH MATCH v. V ICTOR IA . A t Melbourne, January 9 and 10. The New Zealanders made a very disappointing show in this game, and were beaten at all points. After 4 had fallen for 24 in their first innings, Hickmott and Reese made a stand ; and in their second attempt Sneddon and Tuckwell showed good form. For Victoria, Heather, the ex-Transvaal man, hit 65 in 40 minutes (9 fours, two chances), Kiernan made 61 in 80 minutes (6 fours), McDonald 64 in 50 minutes (9 fours), and Matthews 63 in the same time. It does not often happen that a total of over 400 contains no individual score reaching 70. Bennett could not play for New Zealand, owing to a jarred ankle, and Sandman had strained a groin. Lampard bowled effectively for the winners ; he is a googly man of some promise, though formerly a wicket-keeper. Victoria won by an innings and n o runs. N e w Z e a l a n d . F IF TH MATCH v. SOUTHERN D ISTR ICTS. A t Goulburn, December 31 and January 1. New Zealand won this game by 8 wickets, Tuckwell making top score in each innings. L. Thompson (27 and 84), and Edis (54, first innings) batted well for the local side, and W. Tickner bowled best. S o u t h e r n D is t r ic t s scored 147 (Edis 54, L. A t Adelaide, January 16, 18, and 19. Here at last the New Zealand batsmen did well— or at least some of them did. It must be admitted, however, that the bowling they had to meet was not very deadly, for Crawford was off form, and neither Kirkwood nor W hitty played. Limited to three days, the game ended in a draw, after 29 wickets had realised 1,243 runs. Throughout the batting was of the bright and attractive order. In N .Z.’s first Hemus made 46 at a run per minute, Sneddon 88 (6 fours) in just over two hours, and Reese 96 (11 fours) in 145 minutes, while Sandman hit very hard for his 56. Hemus and Sneddon added 63 for the second wicket, Sneddon and Reese 112 for the fourth, and Reese and Sandman 77 for the sixth. The total of 362 only took 4 hours. The South Austra lians made 433 in 25 minutes longer. Donald Steele and Andrew Smith added 73 for the second wicket, Pellew and Willsmore 118 for the sixth, and Hill and Crawford 117 for the eighth. Steele batted 90 minutes for his 73 (1 six, 1 five, 7 fours, the larger items due to oveithrows) ; Willsmore, in his first big match, made 58 in 50 minutes (8 fours) ; Pellew scored his 94 in as many minutes, and Clem Hill his 92 in 105 minutes. Craw'- ford, usually hard of hit, did not force the game. In their second innings the Maorilanders had 5 out for 104, of which Sneddon had made exactly half in 100 minutes. Then Reese and Taylor added 149, the New Zealand captain hitting finely all round the wicket. Taylor batted 130 minutes for his valuable 43, which helped greatly to ensure his side against defeat. Reese’s 130* only took 140 m inutes; he hit 1 six
